J'avais chargé la version Beta de "Google Desktop Search" il y a quelque temps, et j'étais déjà enthousiasmé par le produit. La version finale enlève les derniers petits problèmes.

Conclusion: Si vous avez beaucoup d'espace disque et beaucoup de documents et/ou de mail, vous allez adorer Google Desktop Search!


Les moteurs de recherche sur le poste local se multiplient depuis quelque temps:
  • Microsoft a enfin décidé de réaliser un produit sérieux, et présente diverses évolutions qui permettent d'entravoir ce que sera le tant attendu Longhorn
  • Yahoo, Google, Copernic proposent également leurs produits, de même que le français Baobab .
Pourquoi un tel sucès? Ces outils permettent de retrouver en un clin d'oeil une information que l'on aurait oubliée au détour d'un fichier de traitement de texte ou d"un tableur.

1 - Mise en route initiale

Après une installation rapide, le programme construit sa base de données des textes présents sur la machine. Pour ma machine fixe, les textes à explorer font quand même près de 90 000 fichiers (2-4 Go) et 20 000 mails (1 Go). Cela prend donc du temps (plusieurs heures), mais cette indexation ne bloque pas la machine: l'indexation ne se produit que lorsque la machine n'est pas utilisée.
Cela prend aussi pas mal d'espace disque!

2 - Utilisation

Mais une fois l'indextion terminée, c'est effectivement le bonheur, on retrouve tout en un instant...
Et, cerise sur le gâteau: quand on fait une recherche web par Google, il affiche aussi combien la recherche locale trouve de fichiers et autres sur votre machine !

3 - Astuces

- Le bouton de lancement lance Internet Explorer, et je voulais y avoir accès aussi depuis Firefox. J'ai tout simplement pris l'adresse qui apparaît dans IE, je l'ai copiée dans Firefox, j'ai bien sûr vérifié que ça marchait, et j'en ai fait un raccourci (j'en ai même fait ma "home page").
- Pour les images: utilisez Picasa du même Google, vous allez être surpris de voir toutes les images présentes sur votre machine...

4 - Regrets

- Les mails indexés sont les mails Outlook.Je ne sais pas si cela marche pour Outlook Express, ou pour Thunderbird
- Ben, puisqu'on indexe les mails d'outlook, pourquoi on n'indexe pas aussi les carnets d'adresses et les agendas? Hein?
